Festival

The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.

From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.

O que (te) diz a dança?

O que (te) diz a dança? is a cycle that aims to broaden the perception of what dance is and demystify the idea that contemporary dance is not for everyone. Based on a set of three creations, the cycle unfolds in performances, talks and workshops.

Coreografia em Sala de Aula
by João dos Santos Martins with Adriano Vicente

A few centuries ago, someone decided to invent a way of writing dances on paper and then passing them on to other people to learn by heart. The dance became a drawing and a language that could be read and passed on to someone else’s body. From body to paper, from paper to body. It was like “dancing” a language and “speaking” a dance, without really understanding where one begins and the other ends.

a besta, as luas
(inside version)
by Elizabete Francisca

Strongly based on the verse I don’t obey because I’m wet, from the song Banho, performed by Elza Soares, I propose to enunciate, through gestures and sounds, a possible representation of the political geography of a non-submissive body.

At a time when so many bodies and voices can hardly exist, it is urgent to claim a place of resistance, transforming possible weaknesses into arrows and powers. The body as a political weapon, the last stronghold of any experience, a cry. An affirmation of individuality, in reconciliation with its identity and sexuality: from sex to the head, from the head to the cosmos, from the cosmos to the ground. A possible mantra to keep me off balance.

Um gesto que não passa de uma ameaça
by Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz

Just like when we repeat a word until it loses its meaning, in this work we try to situate ourselves in that moment of loss and attribution of meaning, of degeneration and transformation, going against the chaotic way in which our mind perceives and associates events. In this way, we free ourselves from semantic and syntactic determinisms, disguise the apparent hierarchy between word, voice, movement and gesture and aspire to new constellations of meaning that reflect the complexity of human experience that is so naively tried to be contained in systems and models.
