Matadouro
Matadouro is the third and final part of a trilogy begun by Marcelo Evelin/Demolition Inc. in 2003 in Holland with the performance “Sertão”, followed by “Bull Dancing” created in 2006 in Brazil.
The trilogy develops around questions related to a dislocated territorial and cultural identity, and the dilemma between the rational and the animalistic in contemporary man, borrowing one part of the novel “Os Sertões” by Euclides da Cunha for each piece, respectively A Terra, O Homem, A Luta.
Matadouro investigates the body as a metaphor for a battlefield on which the blocked battles between the official and the marginal, between savagery and civility, between territory and the globalized world, launch it into the subjective and intermediary world of the “in between”. The performance incorporates the battle in its final state – resisting not against but in favour of – through a continuous action, accompanied by the Quintet in C Major by Franz Schubert.
