Production & Touring — Accompanied Artist by Materiais Diversos 2026-2028

No período de 2026-2028, a Materiais Diversos acompanha a produção e a difusão da nova criação de Piny, a.travessa.da, que teve a sua estreia na edição de 2026 do DDD — Festival Dias da Dança, assim como, da produção e difusão do espetáculo ONYX — um ritual coreográfico de resistência, memória e futuro, em co-criação com André Cabral.

Piny é a artista apoiada pela Materiais Diversos no âmbito do projeto europeu DRIFT – Dance and Research In the Future Time (wave 1), um programa dedicado à investigação, apoio e desenvolvimento artístico para artistas coreógrafos e interdisciplinares que se encontram a meio do seu percurso profissional. No âmbito deste projeto, Piny dará início à investigação Standing Ancestors que será apresentada no DRIFT Research Showcase, em novembro 2026, no BIT Teatergarasjen.

Artist, architect, performer, dancer, educator and choreographer of Portuguese and Angolan descent, Piny began her dance training in 1999, with a focus on Middle Eastern and North African dance forms. Since 2006, she has developed an extensive practice of learning, research and teaching in North American urban dance styles, namely breakdance, hip hop, house, vogue and waacking. Her work has centred on exploring the fusions and intersections between these languages, treating them as territories for creation, expression and reflection on political, social and identity-based contexts.

I seek new ways to present and share a process that has been and continues to be the streets, that has been and continues to be clubbing, that has been and continues to be intimate, that has been and continues to be crooked. A process that doesn’t fit neatly into any format, which is why I search for it. It is a practical, lived investigation. Being present in places and spaces, being part of them, not taking away, but being.

I tell stories, share personal archives and others collected over many years. I question performance, I question academia, I question the body, and I weave together plants, the city, and the social processes of destruction and construction of cultures and bodies. Always in the plural.

Literally, it means being crossed (atravessada) by something, by many things. To be intersected. To be mischievous, to unsettle. To serve myself on a platter. To be a street crossing between two larger streets. To be a crossing.

Overlays of memories and volcanoes.
Street culture and entangled nature. 
Clubbing spaces for a single body.
Crowded imagery for a lonely space.
Tissue, from Fascia to Cosmos.
Oracles for never-ending parties.

To (dis)solve the world into full nothingness.

The practice of these bodies is as enchanted as it is brutal. There is the ancestry of a potent future. It is poetic and it has pleasure. There is calm and meteoric chaos, a sharing of personal archives and fantasies where the skin is intended not as a border but as a vehicle. We bring the street, the past and future in limbos of mantras and drums.

ONYX is a oneiric army of vacuum and presence, the erasure of borders between political and social intervention and the creation of a dreamlike space, charged with silence, noise, nonlinear information, weight, and a fluctuation of time.

We speak through bodies inhabited by dances of resistance, family stories of migration, and gently, we cross ritual, performance, eroticism, struggle, and oneiric-political fantasy. We navigate fluidly across genres and reconstruct languages of street and clubbing dances, as an evocation of their future ancestry. From hip hop to Vogue, we do it in the real world, so we bring it here. They are our weapons. Also words that we exchange and scream in between samples of so much music that also raised us. As if the body was not a boundary, as if history was not full of absences, with the certainty that imagination is absolutely essential. The revolution might indeed lie in the ability to imagine. Before, during, and after the action.
