Festival

The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.

From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.

Philosophy Workshop for Children

Rita Pedro

Studied Philosophy at Nova University of Lisbon. Since 1999, she promotes philosophy ateliers with children, advises teachers´ qualifications and lectures at seminars, namely at the Escola Superior de Educação Maria Ulrich. For 5 years, she was the adviser on several projects in the same area, geared towards children and young people between the ages of 4 and 18 years, emigrants and children of emigrants from Cape Verde, in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood. She was a grant recipient from Inovart in Cape Verde, where she worked with children from rural and fishing communities also in FCC. She is currently working on her Doctorate, under the advisory of the philosopher José Gil, at the Nova University of Lisbon and the UERJ in Rio de Janeiro.
She has been regularly invited by various programmers to develop activities for institutions and cultural events, including a mini-conference on racism, for children.

This workshop is a complement to the cycle of theatre and philosophy workshops for children, on the very important object for children within the context of the classroom, the TABLE (MESA). The topic was inspired by the book “Uma mesa é uma mesa. Será?” (A Table is a Table, or is it?), published by Planeta Tangerina, and by the research that done for the performance MESA by Catarina Requeijo.
We need to build new brains; new metaphysical brains, in order to know how to listen to children today. From why to why, and through their day to day events, they draw lines with their thinking, arriving at the most fundamental concepts and questionings of the human being! One question leads to another…we will use their philosophical questioning as a point of departure, to be surprised, and to exercise our minds.
