Festival

The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.

From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.

IN PRACTICE is a summer school focused in the performing arts field, for both artists and researchers, co-organized by Materiais Diversos and the Centre for Theatre Studies (FLUL). It’s an annual meeting where, deliberately, no distinction is made between theory and practice as a way to re-evaluate and re-inscribe our actions, as individuals as well as professionals, in a world driven towards effectiveness, acceleration and competition. We thus propose to embody one of the great challenges of the present time, to re-learn how to speak to each other, to re-learn how to make.

Parliament of questions for a political body: who has one?

With Volmir Cordeiro, Gustavo Vicente e Rui Pina Coelho

Because it doesn’t interest us (here, now) to define a political body, we propose the establishment of a parliament of individual and/or collective questions that may be addressed to the notions of body and politics, as well as their many intersections. We suggest a parliament in what it has of an assembly of members that speak (parlent), preach and expose themselves when presenting propositions of social change. We consider that speech is at the centre of the political body: who speaks, who is heard, who is understood, who is followed and for what reasons? To speak, to discuss, to listen and to question are the basic tools to act IN PRACTICE in democracy: which speeches matter and through what means do they express? The criteria which envelopes this encounter is that politics is not just for specialized managers nor about seeking for a docile agreement between oppositions; politics is something in the body, and being in the body is something for all the people.
