The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.
From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.
Subterrâneo is a study on the tale by Gabriel Tarde Fragment d’histoire future, a narrative about a civilization that takes refuge from a climatic apocalypse inside the earth. It belongs to a cycle based on narratives that depict the tension between utopia and dystopia and that relate them to a construction of the idea of nature, following in the sequence of Aluvião, an installation that started from the story Drowned World by J. G. Ballard. Subterrâneo had two moments of research, a residence with Lugar a Dudas, in Cali, where some installation and sound work possibilities were rehearsed from Tarde’s text, another in Can Serrat, Barcelona, mainly focused on the history of speleology of the Montserrat mountain, which would continue this April. It proposes to produce materials around a critical and contemporary reading of Tarde’s text, crossing it with the history of Portuguese caving and biospeleology, with a focus on the Massif Calcário Estremenho. The means used will be diverse, collection of images and text fragments from archives, production of sound records and video of visits to caves and the life that occupies them, as well as readings of fragments of the text of Tarde. Part of the material may be produced in collaboration with the local community and organized as a multimedia installation.
