BANANADA: OPERANTÍPODA (Part I) — Marcelo Evelin
Marcelo Evelin will be in residence in Caen and Faro in April, and will hold an open rehearsal on the 17th at 7pm in Caen.
The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.
From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.

About the book:
In 2019, the Festival Materiais Diversos celebrated 10 years of existence with an edition that took place from September 27 to October 6, 2019, in Alcanena, Minde, Cartaxo. With regard to the anniversary and in order to reflect on themes underlying the work developed in the territories outside the large cities, the Festival Materiais Diversos has proposed to reflect and systematize 10 years of festival editions, but not only. Observing the history of the Festival Materiais Diversos was the motto for tracing and writing the history of dance and performing arts and its relationship with the new centers of creation, programming and dissemination, outside the big cities.
How the encounter between contemporary performing arts and local communities is developed? Who are the protagonists of this story? What balance can be drawn about the current conditions of artistic creation in the field of dance and performing arts outside the major centers? To what extent have cultural policies contributed to the “new territories”? What work of meeting, accessibility, mediation and participation with the public brought festivals and events like the MD?
These were some topics for a group of collaborators, including creators, programmers, theorists and critics to develop conversations, texts and visual essays that culminated in the object-book (bilingual – PT / EN) Unexpected Landscapes — Other places for the performing arts. The combination of different perspectives allowed a creative approach to the development of the Festival Materiais Diversos, but also to the evolution of the national artistic panorama, in a perspective that starts from an analysis of the past and the present to outline lines of thought for the future.
