Festival

The Materiais Diversos Festival promotes the meeting of different audiences and imaginaries around the arts (dance, theatre, music and performance) with thought, questioning actuality and fostering cultural participation as a condition for citizenship. Born in Minde, in 2009, it spread to Alcanena and Cartaxo (in 2013) and became one of the most representative projects for programming outside the large centres in Portugal, attempting to think and act from the places it originates. It had been occurring annually until 2017 and became a biannual event starting with its 10th edition in 2019.

From the 5th to the 15th of October 2023, the Festival Materiais Diversos will be in Alcanena and Minde with a program of dance, theater and music shows, installations and conversations. Slowing down and making people, places and processes visible are the mottos of the 12th edition of the festival.

Catarina Miranda

Artist living and working in Porto. Catarina Miranda has been developing and presenting creative projects mostly for stage and video, working with languages that intercept movement, voice, image, scenography and light, approaching the body as a vessel for the transformation and mediation of hypnagogic states, as well as for the gestures and procedures of the visceral conscience of the present.
She presented the following stage pieces/ performances:
DREAM IS THE DREAMER at DDD Festival 2019 in Porto, Portugal;
BOCA MURALHA at Palais de Tokyo/ Paris, during the Festival DO DISTURB 2019; at Porto’s National Theatre Carlos Alberto in 2017; at Materiais Diver- sos and Circular Festivals during 2016;
MAZEZAM at Serralves Museum, during the Festival THE MUSEUM AS PERFORMANCE 2018; and at AltesFinanzamt, Berlin in 2013;
REIPOSTO REIMORTO at Porto’s Municipal Theatre in 2015.
Miranda has finished the Master on Choreography EXERCE at ICI-CCN Montpellier/France, and the studies in NOH Theatre at TTT Program in Kyoto. She is graduated in Visual Arts at the Fine Arts School of Porto’s University/PT.

ΛƬSUMOЯI draws from the Japanese noh theater play Atsumori, written by Zeami Motokiyo in the 15th century, to create a stage dance piece anchored in movement, light, and sound, where spectres and memories, past and present, ancestral techniques and futuristic languages intersect.

Catarina Miranda took this play to develop her own narrative around an apotropaic phantasmagoric dance, addressing relationships with evil, the unknown, the invisible. The quintet of dancers uses claps, whistles, sparks, whispers, and vocal calls while exploring the territory through an interstitial and rhythmic choreography, in a play of specters, shadows, and metamorphoses. There are echoes and traces of the gestures of ancestral and contemporary social dances, here twisted and reconfigured, as if bodies and time were unfoldable, dismemberable, transitional.

Catarina Miranda builds, with Letícia Sckrycky and Joana Mário, a living scenic space, with luminous floor and ceiling, amplified by the original sound composition of Lechuga Zaphiro. The set design plays an active role in this play of spectres, revealing the bodies that dissolve, that transform, that seek to emerge and coexist.

For the AGORA/Montpellier Danse residency, Catarina Miranda’s mobility project was funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut.
